This JazzYYC Youth Lab Band Program is a joint initiative between the Conservatory at Mount Royal University and JazzYYC. Established in 2013, this award winning ensemble is comprised of local youth aged 14 to 20. The JazzYYC Youth Lab builds on the strength of the Calgary music and educational community through expert instruction and participation in an advanced jazz ensemble and combos.

Led by Directors Jay Michalak and Dylan Wiest, veteran guest musicians work with the band to expand their musical horizons. With a focus on ensemble skills, improvisation, medium/advanced repertoire and musicianship, the JazzYYC Youth Lab Band benefits students with a desire to enrich their musical experience. There are 2 large ensembles (lab Band ONE & Lab Band TWO) in the typical big band format with 5 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets plus rhythm section (guitar, piano, bass, drums & percussion). The season goes from mid-Sept to mid-June with 4 – 6 concerts per season including feature performances in the Canadian Jazz Fest (Nov), International Jazz Day (Apr. 30) & Calgary Jazz Fest (June). Auditions take place in June. There are occasional openings in the fall. For more information email: youthlabprogram@jazzyyc.com
