Jazz Nebula's Quintet performs the music of Oscar-nominated and Grammy-winning saxophonist and composer Dexter Gordon. ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS JAZZ MASTER saxophonist Dexter Gordon is widely known in jazz as being the musician to translate alto saxophonist Charlie Parker’s and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie’s BEBOP music innovations to the tenor saxophone. In 1986, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as the fictional character (saxophonist) Dale Turner in Bernard Tavernier’s film ‘Round Midnight. He is the only jazz musician ever to be nominated for that award. The musical score for the film won the Oscar for pianist Herbie Hancock. Dexter Gordon performed in Calgary in 1974.

Duke Ellington has more than 2000 works to his credit, including such well-known standards as Satin Doll, Don’t Get ‘Round Much Anymore, In a Mellow Tone, Lush Life, and more. Ellington earned many awards during his lifetime. Of special note, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 (highest civilian award in the US) and a posthumous Special Pulitzer Prize in 1999 for his lifetime contributions to music and culture.

Herbie Hancock came to prominence with the Miles Davis Quintet of 1965-1968 and recorded the second-best-selling jazz recording of all time (Headhunters).
