Described as a “Hard Bop Revivalist” by Abe Goldstein (Papatamus Redux), Vancouver-based drummer and composer Neil Gray brings the language of classic hard bop and bebop into the present day. His playing carries a sense of “quiet authority and impeccable timing” (Pierre Giroux, All About Jazz), while his compositions draw inspiration from people, places and lived moments.
His recent album In The Streets, produced by Cory Weeds and distributed by Cellar Music Group, “flows freely with melodic sense, top-of-the-mark solos and jazz purity all the way through” (George Fendel, High Standard Jazz).
For his JazzYYC Canadian Festival performance at The Attic, Gray is joined by celebrated Vancouver pianist Bruno Hubert, with the quintet rounded out by leading Calgary musicians.
